Following the tragic events of last Saturday and subsequent reports of shark activity in the lower reaches of the Swan River over recent days, out of an abundance of caution, all dinghy sailing courses and training courses have been suspended from Thursday the 9th of February until further notice.
This includes our Discover Sailing event scheduled for Sunday morning.
Additionally, all dinghy racing scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled.
If you are using the river in anyway please continue to exercise appropriate caution and have safety measures in place.
Historically, the incidence of shark attacks in the river have been incredibly rare and the risk subsequently extremely low, although it is known that Bull Sharks in particular have frequented the river (including the upper reaches) for many years.
We have no knowledge as to whether shark activity in the river is currently more than normal or the current interactions and sightings are coincidental. There is little other than anecdotal evidence at this time, in this regard.
The club will continue to review this situation in light of ongoing advice from the Department of Fisheries, the WA Police and Town of East Fremantle, City of Fremantle and Town of Mosman Park.
An update will be provided after this weekend.
Sincerely
Peter Halliday Margaret Shiner
