EFYC Consistency & Sharpie State Selections — A Blustery Day on Blackwall Reach

With winds gusting over 20 knots and the Sharpie State Selections underway, it was an action-packed day of racing at East Fremantle Yacht Club on the weekend.

Club consistency racing got underway at 2:00 pm with a rare and exciting boat start just downriver of Chidley Point. Six fleets hit the water in challenging conditions, but the strong sou’wester soon began to take its toll — several boats retired early, and a few needed to be towed back, delaying the Sharpie racing slightly.

Once the Sharpies hit the line around 2:30 pm, the action was on. A shifty 18–22 knot breeze made for fast, furious, and technical racing — with a few passing “party boats” adding extra colour to the afternoon! The start team ran a slick three-race series, wrapping up just after 4:00 pm, with sailors soon back ashore and heading straight for the bar to swap stories from the day.

A huge thank you to the organisation committee and the EFYC team who made the event possible — Margaret, Joel, Helen, and Kylie — and to our brilliant on-water crew:

  • Start Boat: Alex, Kate, Jane & Tim (three ROs on one boat — what could go wrong?)
Special thanks to Alex for loaning his fantastic boat!

  • Support 1: Louis, Brett & team — excellent job with the marks!

  • Support 2: Derek & Andrew

  • Support 3: Youth parents & coaches

  • Support 100: Marnie & our support team in training (thank you for the great photos — more to come!)

  • Banjo: Josh & Kylie (and thanks to Josh for bringing out his RIB).

Well done to all sailors and volunteers who braved the blustery conditions — and best of luck to the Sharpie teams heading to South Australia in January 2026 to represent WA at the nationals.
