Catalpa Classic Delivers a Glorious Escape

The Catalpa Classic once again brought history to life as TCYC and FSC hosted the annual re-creation of one of the most audacious maritime escapes in the world. In 1876, six Irish Fenian prisoners broke free from Fremantle Prison and fled aboard the American whaling ship Catalpa, escaping British pursuit under the protection of international waters. Today, that drama unfolds on the water as the Fenian Fleet races to evade the chasing Authorities.

Ideal Conditions for a Historic Race

Although storms were forecast, the opening races of the EFYC Inshore Series enjoyed near-perfect sailing conditions. A steady westerly and slight to moderate seas set up a clean, single-tack reach both to Rockingham in the morning and back to Fremantle in the afternoon. The wind angle kept most spinnakers packed away, with fleets sailing primarily under Jib and Main.

EFYC Represents in the Fenian Fleet

EFYC was proudly represented by B-Jetty neighbours Turkish Delight and Precious Little, drafted into the Fenian Fleet for the chase reenactment. True to tradition, the Fenians enjoyed a 15-minute head start over the FSC Authorities, who launched their pursuit with enthusiasm. With the first boat across the line hailing from TCYC, the Fenian Fleet secured victory on the day.

A Close Duel Between EFYC Boats

Within the broader drama, a thrilling intra-club contest unfolded:

  • Feeder Race to Rockingham: Precious Little beat Turkish Delight on corrected time by 00:03:38.

  • Race Back to Fremantle: The afternoon brought another tight finish, with Precious Little again taking the honours by 00:02:36.

The Precious Little crew ended the day with well-deserved bragging rights, while Turkish Delight delivered spirited, competitive sailing and plenty of camaraderie befitting the event.

Looking Ahead: 150 Years of Catalpa History

Next year’s Catalpa Classic will mark the 150th anniversary of the famous Fenian escape, and EFYC has been invited to rejoin the Fenian Fleet for this milestone edition. It promises to be a celebration of sailing, storytelling, club spirit, and the enduring legacy of one of the greatest maritime breakouts in history.

Goolugatup Sailing Carnival: Celebrating Our Podium Sailors at South of Perth Yacht Club

The Goolugatup Sailing Carnival delivered a weekend of determination, talent, and true sailing spirit as our EFYC sailors took on challenging conditions at South of Perth Yacht Club. Despite the testing weather, our fleet rose to the occasion, showcasing grit, growth, and an impressive level of sportsmanship across every race.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our podium sailors:

Gold Fleet

🥇 Lailah Beck
🥈 Harriet Mellor
🥉 Miles Beck

Silver Fleet

🥇 Arnaud Laroche
🥈 Lachlan Batt
🥉 Giorgio Sommacal

Open Skiff Freestyle Event

🏆 Ophelia Beck

While the podium results are worth celebrating, the weekend was about much more than medals. Every sailor who competed overcame shifting winds, tactical challenges, and moments that pushed them outside their comfort zones. From confident starts to tight mark roundings and renewed focus between races, our fleet demonstrated admirable perseverance.

The carnival atmosphere at SoPYC added to the excitement, with families and supporters cheering from the shore and creating a fantastic community vibe. The event served as a reminder of the strength of junior sailing in WA and the positive pathways that events like this help build.

We extend a warm thank you to South of Perth Yacht Club for hosting the event,  to WA Open Skiff Sailing and to Kraken Images for capturing the action.

As we look ahead, our sailors won’t have long to rest. We’re gearing up for the next OSWA Cup powered by MonkeyFist Marine: the International Classes Regatta (ICR) at RFBYC, where we hope to see another strong EFYC showing.

Congratulations to all competitors, your hard work paid off, and we’re excited for what’s next!
